The journal “Asia’s Wildlife Trade” published at National Geographic Magazine, Jan 2010 was really catch my eyes. It is story about the illegal wildlife trade/trafficking by a Malaysian, Anson Wong. Here are the highlights and points that I would like to share.
1. Anson Wong was named the world’s most wanted smuggler of endangered species.
2. Anson assured that they had nothing to fear from Malaysian authorities.
3. Said Anson, “I’ve the second man of customs bring him out of the airport…”
4. “I can get anything here from anywhere… …nothing can be done to me”
5. “When he (Anson) was in prison, he wrote me letters. He bribed his way. They treated him like a king”
6. And here is the last paragrapgh: Last Aug, Misliah (the Malaysia Perhilitan’s officer) responded to allegations of a corruption relationship between her department and Anson Wong “as far as Malaysia is concerned, he abides by local laws and has necessary licenses,” she said “What he does outside the country IS NOT OUR CONCERN.”
I was shock while reading this article. Never ever know that the most wanted smuggler is from my country, the comments to Malaysian authorities by outsider, and so SHAME TO MALAYSIAN AUTHORITIES CORRUPTIONS!
